Summer 2013 - Josh and Chloe are 3.5

Sam and Jen had been looking forward to Saturday all week. Carol would be watching Chloe and Josh while Sam and Jen took Lily and  Harley out on one of the trails. It had been a while since they'd both been out together. Rob and Steve were going to be working on their trucks, or so they said. Sam seen them more likely to sit out under one of the big shade trees with a cooler full of beer and doing nothing. She and Jen didn't mind. They were just excited about getting out on the trails.

Once they'd all eaten lunch and got the kids down for their naps, Sam pushed Steve against the wall and kissed him softly. "Sure you two don't wanna come with us?"

He waits for her and reaches for her hand, squeezing gently and starting down to the kitchen and before they get there he tugs her against him and kisses her neck "Tonight, just you and me sweetheart" he whispered, kissing her neck once more before heading to the kitchen.

She was surprised to see him when she came out of the bathroom but was glad he was there. She took his hand and let him lead her downstairs, hugging him tight when he stopped. "That's all I want, just me and you and no bad stuff." She flashed him a tiny smile and kept a tight hold on his hand as they headed to the kitchen, looking for the kids and checking to see if dinner was ready.

"Just you, me and nothin' or no one else" he said softly, turning into the kitchen and leaning to kiss Chloe and Josh who were currently helping grandma throw the now warmed tortillas into the little basket, Chloe taking it and scampering to the table, giggling and reaching up for mommy, "Mama, look what we made! Tacos!" She said excitedly.

She stayed snuggled up to Steve until they were in the kitchen and she smiled softly watching the kids with Carol. It was all she could do not to run back upstairs in a heap of tears just looking at Josh and knowing he was clueless about his mama. Luckily, Chloe distracted her at just the right time and she scooped her up, covering her face in kisses. "Did you and Josh have fun today helping grandma?"

Chloe giggled and squirmed around when mommy smothered her in kisses and josh giggled, reaching for Sam "Me! Me next auntie!" He squealed, little hands grabbing for her and Steve reached over and stole a tortilla chip, popping it in his mouth and Carol moves to pop him but just raises a brow "You're a terrible example for these two" she laughed, nodding to Chloe and Josh. Steve smiled and took the bowl of chips, fresh salsa, guacamole, sour cream and shredded lettuce into the dining room, making sure the kids had their booster seats and he grabs plates for everyone, handing one to Sam and holding into Chloe and Josh's. "Okay guys, crunchy of soft taco?" He asked.

Right now, Sam couldn't help but think thank god for kids. They were just what she needed to get her mind off of Jen and what had happened earlier that day. She smiled at Josh and set Chloe down, scooping him up in her arms and smothering him in kisses just like she'd done Chloe. She followed Steve into the dining room, Josh thrown over her shoulder, giggling and squirming around before Sam sat him down in his booster seat. Sam took her plate and looked at the spread of food on the table, her tummy softly rumbling. "Everything looks so good." She set her plate down and reached for Josh to help Steve out. "I'll fix Josh's." She looked around for Will, wondering what had happened with Harley.

Josh and Chloe giggle, letting Sam and Steve settle them in their seats and Steve fixes up a soft taco for Chloe, putting some chips and salsa on her plate and sets it in front of her. He looks over as he hears the front door open and close, seeing his dad and he looks at Steve and he knows, just from that look, he knows Harley hadn't made it and he swallows hard, preparing to tell Sam.

Sam fixed Josh a soft taco, and put a scoop of Spanish rice on his plate along with some chips and salsa. She was starting to feel better and she sat down, grabbing a tortilla to make herself a soft taco when she looked up and saw Will. She then looked at Steve and dropped the tortilla on her plate, not wanting more bad news. "What happened with Harley?"

Will looked at Sam as he sat down at the table, taking a sip of water and grabbing for a taco she'll and Steve looked over, running his hand over Sams leg, "Later baby" he said softly and Will couldn't help it, he knew she didn't need more bad news and knew if he told her what happened she probably wouldn't eat but he couldn't hide it from her and he set the taco shell down, "He, his leg was too bad to save" he said quietly, eyes falling to his glass of water and if it wasn't for Chloe laughing as she tried to balance her spoon on her nose, he's pretty sure the table would have been completely silent.

She hadn't known how bad Harley was because she was more worried about Jen, thinking Harley was just banged up from what happened. She looked up at Will as he spoke and he didn't need to say anything else to know what happened. She looked at Steve and bit her lip, trying not to cry but a few tears fell down her cheeks that she quickly wiped away. She was glad the kids weren't paying any attention to them, Chloe and Josh not even noticing they were sad. "Did they take him away?" she asked quietly.

Steve moved a hand to rub between her shoulder blades, glancing at Chloe when she giggled again and reminding her to eat her food. Will looks up from his plate and nodded, "Yeah, they did" he said quietly, Steve taking a breath and continuing to rub her back.

She was glad they'd taken him away because it would have been too hard to see him knowing how, even though she was gone, Jen wouldn't have wanted him to be put down. Sam never really understood why they had to put them down when a leg was injured but she'd never really asked and now, it didn't matter. Steve's hand on her back was the only thing keeping her focused right now and she leaned against him a moment. She was quiet a few moments, no words or crying and that probably scared Steve more than anything. Finally, she lifted her head and picked up the tortilla to make herself a soft taco. "We should go ahead and eat. How's Lily after that workout?"

Steve was about to nudge Sam into making herself a taco and then she does it on her own and he rubs her back, letting her know silently that he's there for her. They eat quietly, the kids entertaining every one and when they're all finished, Carol stands up and collects everyone's plats, Will taking the food into the kitchen and Chloe and josh climb down and go play.

About two hours later, the credits were rolling for Toy Story 3, and Steve looked over at Sam next to him on the couch, "Im gonna go get them settled in bed, wanna come in and say goodnight?" He asked.

She guessed it was the wrong time to ask that question so she was quiet while they ate, trying to stay focused on the kids. She wanted to help clean up but Will and Carol had taken care of it. She'd been ready to go back upstairs with Steve but instead, was snuggled up against him as they all watched a movie. Sam had dozed off a few times, waking up when Steve spoke. "Yeah, I'll be in soon. I want to put our dishes in the sink." They'd randomly eaten nachos and salsa throughout the movie. She kissed him softly before they got up and she headed to the kitchen with their dishes, setting everything in the sink since the dishwasher had already been run.

She waited a bit, giving Steve enough time to get the kids changed and settled before she headed down the hall to tell them goodnight.

He smiles against her lips, kissing her once more before heading down the hall and settling Chloe and Josh into bed, reading them a story and finishing just as Sam reaches the door, "Mommy kisses!" Chloe giggled and josh giggled too, reaching for Sam, "Me too auntie!" He grinned, he'd asked Steve about where mommy and daddy were and right now, all he could tell him was they were spending mommy and daddy time together for the night, he didn't want to leave it to rob to tell him but it also wasn't Steve's place to say anything.

He stands and kisses each of them, stepping back to let Sam in and he waits by the door.

She walked into the bedroom and as soon as she heard those giggles, she was smiling again and sitting down on the bed. "You want kisses again?" she teased, leaning down and dropping kisses all over Chloe's face and then Josh's. "Did you two use the bathroom and brush your teeth?" she asked out of habit, both kids saying 'yes' in unison. "Goodnight, sweetie. Love you." she told Chloe, giving her one more kiss and then leaned over to Josh, giving him one more kiss. "Goodnight, sweetie number two, love you." She tucked them both in and then walked over to Steve and standing out in the hall, waiting for him to turn off the light so they can head upstairs. She knew when Rob came back, they'd have to tell Josh about his mama and that they'd do it however Rob wanted.

Steve smiled at Sam as she walked out of the bedroom, reaching for her hand and squeezing gently as he flipped the light off, "Good night, sleep tight" he started and then Chloe and josh giggled and finished it, "Don't let the bed bugs bite!" They yelled, then erupting in a fit of giggles before settling down.

Steve tugged Sam upstairs with him, kissing her cheek and forehead and neck once they reach the top and tugging her into their room.

She laughed softly at Chloe and Josh, so happy and innocent. She leaned against him as they headed through the house and up the stairs, hugging him tight and keeping her arms around him as they walked into the bedroom. "Do you think Rob's okay tonight?" She was worried but suspected he was with a buddy and very drunk right now.

While he'd wanted to say 'yeah, Robs fine' in his heart he knew he wasn't, he knew he was probably slumped over a bar top on his fifth of sixth beer right now and he swallows, "I don't know, I just hope he's got a buddy with 'im" he said and normally HE was that buddy and he felt horrible for not being there but Sam needed him and so did Chloe and Josh, he had to be a husband and father right now.

She wanted to tell Steve to go find Rob and be with him and she felt bad that she didn't just tell him that but she needed him there with her and the kids needed him. While Josh was too young to fully understand everything, he would quickly realize his mother wasn't coming back and Rob would be in no condition to take care of him. "That's what I'm hoping. Is there any way you can find out? Who else would he go to besides you?" If possible, she just needed to know he was okay.Sam took his hand and crawled into bed, motioning for him to sit up and lean back against the headboard so she could crawl across his lap and rest her head against his shoulder.

He sits down on the bed, scooting back as he grabs his phone and sends off a text to rob and a few of their buddies, shrugging a bit and holding his arm out so Sam could snuggle against him if she wanted, looking at his phone when it beeps, "One'a our buddies from the range is with 'im, said they're havin' drinks and that he's keepin' an eye on 'im" he read off the text before setting his phone back on the night stand.

She had said earlier that she just wanted to forget everything that happened that day but it was hard to. It had crossed her mind once or twice that could have been her instead of Jen, her mind trying not to think of how Steve would have handled that. She was quiet as she snuggled up against him, her free hand resting on his shoulder and her index finger tracing patterns around his freckles. She breathed a sigh of relief once she found out Rob wasn't alone and she lifted her head, looking at Steve. "I just wanted to know he wasn't alone." she whispered, kissing Steve soft and slow once he set his phone down.

He kisses her back and shakes his head, "Nah, not alone, he'll take care'a 'im too, make sure he gets home safe" he said softly, kissing her again and smoothing one hand up her back and back down, hugging her to him and his mind wanders to Rob, having to wake up tomorrow and realize his house is no longer filled with his family, that he's one less, and one very important part less and he swallows hard, kissing Sam harder, needing to forget and shake those images off.

She knew Steve was thinking similar things to what she was. It was hard not to when one of their best friends was gone. She held Steve tighter and deepened that kiss, hoping to calm him down. No matter what they did that night, she needed gentle and caring. There was so much she wanted to say right now but they needed time for them. The next several days were going to be hell and they both knew that. "I love your kisses." she whispered against his lips, sucking the bottom one into her mouth.

He smiled into that kiss, causing his lip to tug away from her and her kisses the tip of her nose, hands moving to her hips and tugging her to straddle him, "I love givin' you kisses ... and gettin' kisses" he whispered, kissing her lips softly, hands smoothing over her ass and resting at the small of her back.
